Mozart & Strauss concerts at Schönbrunn Palace with exclusive after-hours access

Long before it became a concert venue for today’s visitors, the Orangery at Schönbrunn was a stage for imperial spectacle. Empress Maria Theresia hosted lavish banquets here, where music was not just entertainment but a display of power and refinement. The hall even witnessed legendary competitions, including a famous contest between Mozart and Salieri. At more than 180 meters in length, it was built to impress both in scale and in sound, its acoustics designed to carry music with clarity and brilliance.

A historic stage once graced by Mozart

In 1786, Mozart himself performed in the Orangery, making every concert here feel like a step back into Vienna’s golden era of music.

The perfect acoustics of the Orangery

The hall was designed for performances, with soaring ceilings and gilded interiors that give the music a richness and clarity you rarely experience elsewhere.

A blend of Mozart and Strauss in one evening

The program combines Mozart’s operatic arias with Strauss’s waltzes and polkas, letting you experience two of Vienna’s greatest composers in a single sitting.

Flexible ticket options for every visitor

From budget-friendly seats to indulgent VIP packages, and add-ons like a Schönbrunn interiors tour, a 3-course dinner, and a Christmas market visit, there’s a choice for every kind of traveler.

Accessibility without compromise

The Orangery is fully equipped with ramps, accessible toilets, and designated wheelchair seating, ensuring everyone can enjoy the performance comfortably.

Things to know before booking Schönbrunn Palace concerts

  • Be sure to double-check the venue listed on your ticket, as most concerts take place in the Schönbrunn Orangery, but some dates are moved to other palace halls such as the Great Gallery, the White-Gold Room, or even the palace theatre.
  • Seating is arranged by category, meaning you can choose any spot within your section (VIP, A, B, or C). Doors open about 30 minutes before the concert, so arriving early lets you choose your spot and improves your chances of sitting closer to the stage.
  • If you value comfort and a smoother overall experience, consider purchasing VIP tickets. They come with extra perks like skip-the-line entry at the entrance and at the concert bar, better seats toward the front, access to a VIP lounge or separate cloakroom, a welcome drink, and a program booklet.
  • Expect the performance to last around 1 hour and 45 minutes with a short intermission in between.
  • The concerts are fully wheelchair accessible. Step-free entrance routes are provided at the Orangery, ramps and barrier-free facilities are in place, and accessible toilets are available. There are also designated wheelchair spaces inside the performance hall so that guests with mobility needs can enjoy the concert comfortably.
  • While there is no strict dress code, we recommend wearing smart casual or semi-formal clothing. Avoid athleisure, sportswear, or flip-flops.
  • If you book a Schönbrunn concert and dinner ticket, pay close attention to timings. Tours start at specific hours, dinners are served on a fixed schedule, and the concert always begins at 8:30pm. Arriving late could mean missing part of your experience.

Performance was fantastic. Bit clunky with the tickets though. I'd bought A area tickets that said they came with a glass of sparkling. Had to speak to a few people to get the glass as it was a 'mistake'. The room was also really hot for the first act and couldn't take in any water because of the glass bottles. Overall it was a pretty great night though.

Your complete guide to attending a concert at Schönbrunn Palace

  • March to May: Concerts during this season are not as crowded as in summer, meaning you can often find good seating categories without needing to book too far in advance.
  • June to August: Vienna’s summer season is the busiest time of the year, and concerts often sell out well in advance, particularly in the VIP section and Category A. To secure dinner concerts, it’s best to book your tickets at least 2 to 3 weeks ahead of your visit.
  • September to October: September still carries the energy of the summer season, so tickets remain in high demand, but by October, the pace slows down, allowing more flexibility in booking.
  • November to February: Winter is usually the quietest season for Schönbrunn concerts. November and January offer flexible bookings and better seating availability, while December stands out as one of the busiest months thanks to the Christmas Market, holiday travel, and the popular New Year gala concerts.

  • Take U4 (Green Line) and get off at Schönbrunn station, then follow the signs to the palace. The walk to the Orangery entrance takes around 5 to 10 minutes.
  • If you prefer the tram, lines 10 and 60 both stop at Schloss Schönbrunn, which is right by the palace gates. From there, it is just a short walk across the forecourt to the Orangery.
  • Bus travelers can use routes 10A, 63A, or 8A, all of which stop within walking distance of the palace grounds. The 10A connects well with other subway lines, making it handy if you’re coming from a different district.
  • For those driving, there is a designated parking area directly in front of the Orangery. Parking is available until midnight and is charged at an hourly rate, but spaces can fill quickly on concert evenings.
How to get to Schönbrunn Palace?
  • Ticket collection: You can pick up your concert tickets at the Orangery box office from 10am to 6:30pm on the day of the concert. If you prefer to collect them later, the evening box office opens again from 7pm until 8:30pm. Have your booking confirmation and a photo ID ready to ensure a seamless experience.
  • Cloakroom: Leave larger coats and bags at the cloakroom located just inside the Orangery near the hall entrance, as they are not permitted in the concert hall. VIP tickets include free use, while other categories pay a €1 fee per item.
  • Doors opening: Entry to the hall usually begins about 30 minutes before the concert. Seating is free within your chosen category, so the earlier you arrive, the better your chance of finding a preferred seat. VIP guests have a separate priority line to speed up entry.
  • Finding your seat: Categories are clearly marked in the hall, with ushers available to guide you. Category C is towards the rear, B in the middle, A near the front, and VIP in the first rows.
  • Pre-concert atmosphere: The bar opens before the performance and during intermission. Category A tickets often include a complimentary drink, and VIP guests receive a welcome drink along with another at the bar.
  • The performance begins promptly at 8:30pm and lasts around 1 hour and 45 minutes, including a short 15-minute intermission.
  • The first half of the evening is dedicated to Mozart, featuring overtures, arias, and duets from operas such as The Magic Flute, The Marriage of Figaro, and Don Giovanni. These pieces are performed by a chamber orchestra, often joined by a soprano and baritone for vocal highlights.
  • After intermission, the focus shifts to Johann Strauss, the ‘Waltz King’, with lively waltzes, polkas, and operetta arias, including audience favorites like The Blue Danube and Radetzky March.
  • The Orangery is designed to feel both intimate and grand, with seating arranged by category rather than numbered seats, so your view depends on when you arrive and which category you choose.

The magic of Schönbrunn Christmas concerts

During the festive season, Schönbrunn Palace offers a concert experience unlike any other time of year. The palace forecourt turns into a glittering Christmas and New Year’s Market, where wooden stalls are filled with handmade ornaments, spiced gingerbread, and warm mugs of mulled wine.

Surrounded by Baroque architecture, the music takes on a more celebratory tone, and some evenings feature a slightly adapted program with lighter, festive pieces woven into the classic Mozart and Strauss selections. The glow of chandeliers, combined with the hush of a winter evening outside, creates a uniquely cozy yet elegant setting.

Frequently asked questions about Schönbrunn Palace concerts

Where do I collect my tickets?

Head to the Orangery’s reservation office between 10am and 6:30pm, or at the evening box office from 7pm to 8:30pm, to pick up your Schönbrunn Palace concert tickets. Keep your ticket voucher or booking confirmation email and photo ID handy to ensure a seamless experience.

What are the rules on recording during the concert?

Recording sound, video, or taking photos during the performance is not permitted for copyright reasons. You may take pictures before or after the concert, but not during.

Can I choose my exact seat when booking?

No. Seating is free within each category, which means your ticket guarantees a section rather than a specific seat. Early arrival is the best way to secure your ideal view.

Are there wheelchair-accessible facilities?

Yes. The concert halls are barrier-free with ramps, accessible toilets, and designated wheelchair spaces. Make sure to specify your requirements when booking tickets or contact the organiser ahead of time to reserve a wheelchair-friendly seat.

How early should I arrive before the concert?

Doors typically open 30 minutes before the performance, and seating is unassigned within your chosen category. Arriving early gives you the best chance to pick a preferred spot.

What happens if I am late for a concert that includes a palace tour?

Palace tour times are fixed and cannot be delayed, so if you arrive late, you’ll miss this part of the package. In such cases, the tour portion cannot be rescheduled or refunded.

What if my concert is moved to a different venue?

On certain dates, concerts may take place in the Great Gallery, the White-Gold Room, or the Schönbrunn Palace Theatre. Your ticket remains valid, and your seating category is honored in the new venue.

Are the concerts suitable for someone new to classical music?

Yes. The concerts showcase Mozart and Strauss favorites that are instantly recognizable and easy to enjoy, so even first-time listeners can follow along and appreciate the performance just as much as experienced concertgoers.

Is there parking available for evening concerts?

Yes. Paid parking is available directly in front of the Orangery until midnight, but spaces are limited on busy concert nights.

What is the minimum age for attendance?

Children under the age of 5 or 6 are generally not admitted to the concerts, as the performance setting is not suitable for very young audiences. For children above this age, a regular ticket is required, and no free lap tickets are provided.
