    History of Ronacher Theater

Built in 1872, the Ronacher Theater emerged as a ‘Viennese City Theatre,’ and offered plays and operettas mostly to the middle class. Soon, it embraced new horizons, transforming into a variety theater featuring diverse entertainment like revues, dance, and even magic shows. Josephine Baker's captivating presence further cemented its status as a cultural hotspot.

The 20th century saw another shift as the Ronacher temporarily became a television studio. However, its theatrical soul prevailed, leading it to return to its roots in 1984. Since then, the theater, under the Vereinigte Buhnen Wien, has thrived as a renowned venue for large-scale musicals, captivating audiences with popular shows and international hits.

Today, visitors can not only experience world-class musical productions but also delve into the rich history of this 150-year-old landmark. Marvel at its grand architecture and experience a slice of Vienna's vibrant cultural scene.

    Ronacher Theater's architecture

Stepping into the Ronacher Theater is like experiencing a world of the past. Its very architecture is a standing testament to its rich history. The grand facade, built in the Neo-Renaissance style, with its imposing columns and arched windows, reflects its initial purpose as a respected ‘Viennese City Theatre’.

Inside, you can find the columns and arches filled with ornate details. The seats are made from luxurious materials like velvet and contain gold detailings. These elaborate interiors hint at the opulence once associated with operettas and high-society entertainment.

However, traces of the theater's evolving character are also evident. The open layout and moveable seating can accommodate all kinds of spectators. These subtle architectural shifts, like chapters in a book, reveal the Ronacher's remarkable journey, and how it transformed from a classic Viennese theater to a versatile stage for modern entertainment.

    Ronacher Theater's popular productions

The Ronacher Theater's stages have witnessed a variety of performances throughout its 150-year history, reflecting the evolving tastes and trends of Vienna's cultural landscape. Its early years were defined by classic plays and operettas like those by Johann Strauss II, catering to the city's sophisticated audiences.

The 20th century transformed the Ronacher into a variety stage. Revues like ‘The White Horse Inn’ and performances by legendary artists like Josephine Baker captivated audiences with their vibrant energy and innovative formats.

In 1984, the Ronacher embraced the world of large-scale musicals. Since then, it has showcased international hits like ‘The Phantom of the Opera’ and ‘Evita’, drawing crowds with their powerful music, interesting stories, and stunning visuals. The theater's current production, ‘Rock Me Amadeus - Das Falco Musical’, pays homage to the iconic Austrian musician and outlines the power of music to transcend generations and cultures.

One of the most striking and impressive activities I have ever participated in in my life! It's worth spending a little extra to get the seat with unobstructed view because the light show is really well done, coordination between sound and light impeccable! Truly experience not to be missed when you are in Vienna but watch out for the days when the show is performed because it is not always available! Highly recommended!

The musicians were very talented and gave a lovely commentary (and humorous) of the pieces before each song. The singer has a beautiful voice and very much acted her parts according to the selection which made it even more enjoyable. We liked that along with the classical pieces, there were other more modern pieces performed that we were familiar with. Especially the songs from The Sound of Music at the end as it's music we love and has a special place in our hearts. I grew up knowing the music and spending holidays at the Trapp Family Lodge in Stowe Vermont. We absolutely loved the show and will highly recommend to all of our friends and family!

The music was great! The venue was awesome! The singers were outstanding! There are no photos from the concert since taking pictures or video is not allowed during the performance. We had great time and would definetely go again if in Vienna. Pictures of hall were taken during the antract. In addition, we were in Vienna in late November so the Christmas market at Schonbrunn Palace was a pleasure to the soul. Some pictures attached are from the market. Tips: We book the seats in cathegory A and it was definitely worth it. There was a recomendation on the ticket to arrive 15 min before the performance to avoid the delays. We arrived 45 min before since we were using public transportation and didnt want to be late. It was a great bonus for us. Your ticket comes with category for seating but not the reserved seats. Cathegory A was seats from the row 3 to 7 or 8. Since we were almost the first ones to enter the concert hall, we were able to reserve the seats in row 3 in the center.

The musicians are so talented and perform with such precision and enthusiasm, one couldn't help but feel their passion and love for their craft. It's a nice capsule of Mozarts era. World events, living style, food and drink and his music. There's not a lot of Mozart history here ( the building, letters, manuscripts) but they've put together a real feel for it with interesting displays and musical contributions. Worth a trip.
