While hundreds of people were filing in the Votiv Chirch to find their seats, the process was smooth quick and easy. The show started about 3 minutes late amd was spectacular. The show lasted the right amount of time...the lights were amazing and the music accompaniment was excellent.

Spectacular light show fully utilizing the gothic structure of the church. Meaningful storytelling with a dynamic balance of powerful and serene moments that takes you on a journey and re-imagines how the universe came into being. The combination with the classical music adds even more power. An amazing experience that everyone has to have while in Vienna.

Fantastic, it was the first time I saw something like that and it was really good, if I really have to find a flaw then I say that at times the music was not adequate to the meaning of the images

I attended the Light of Creation experience at the Votivkirche, and it genuinely left me with goosebumps from start to finish. I’ve seen light installations before, but nothing compares to the way this event transforms the Votivkirche into a living, breathing masterpiece of light, sound, and emotion. The moment I stepped inside, the entire space felt sacred in a completely new way. The interplay of color and architecture was so immersive that it felt like the cathedral was telling its own story. The music and visuals blended perfectly, calming at times, powerful at others and created a feeling I can only describe as awe. What impressed me most was how the experience made me feel: present, connected, and moved. I caught myself just standing still, absorbing every detail, and wishing the moment wouldn’t end. It wasn’t just beautiful it was deeply emotional. If someone is looking for a unique, atmospheric, soul-stirring experience in Vienna, this is absolutely the one. I walked out feeling inspired and grateful. A breathtaking experience I’ll remember for a long time.

Light of Creation Votivkirche | Vienna’s most immersive light show

Vienna’s centuries-old Votive Church (Votivkirche) isn’t your average sightseeing spot—it’s where ancient architecture and innovative artistry come together through the Light of Creation show. With vibrant projections dancing across Gothic arches and towering spires and a stirring musical score, it’s an immersive experience you won't find on your average Vienna itinerary.

Things to know before buying Light of Creation tickets

  • Seating is available during the show. It is divided into categories based on viewing quality. Category I offers unobstructed views, while Category II may have partial obstructions due to architectural features like columns or chandeliers. You’ll get an option to select your preferred category at the time of booking.
  • The show is suitable for audiences aged six and above. However, be mindful that the combination of darkness, strobe-like lighting effects, and powerful music might be overwhelming for some children or individuals with sensory sensitivities.
  • Every person needs a ticket—including children. Due to official capacity limits tied to the church’s emergency exit regulations, every individual attending the show counts toward the venue’s total capacity.
  • The performance lasts approximately 30 minutes, making it a manageable addition to your itinerary. Multiple showings are available throughout the week, typically in the evenings, allowing for flexibility in planning your visit.
  • Reduced tickets are available for children aged 6 to 17 years and students up to 25 years with a valid ID.
  • The Votive Church is accessible for visitors with mobility needs. However, it lacks air conditioning, so it can become quite warm in summer and noticeably cold in winter.

An experience beyond the ordinary

This show doesn’t tell a traditional story with characters. Instead, it explores the theme of the creation of the universe through symbolism—cosmos, nature, evolution, and the human journey—all conveyed through visual cues and sound inside a historic Gothic church.

Admire the church’s architecture in a new light (literally)

You could admire the Votive Church by day, but at night, under projection mapping, it becomes something else. Light's different patterns highlight architectural details you’d otherwise miss—grooves in the stone, shadows in the arches, and how the ceiling lifts as if pulled upward by the light.

You don’t need to speak German

There’s no narration, no language barrier, and no need for prior knowledge. Visual storytelling and music drive the experience, so whether you’re fluent in German or English, you’ll follow along just fine.

A compact experience that fits any schedule

The show runs for 30 minutes, making it ideal even for tightly packed travel plans. You can squeeze it in before dinner or after a day of sightseeing in Vienna. Shows typically run in the evening, so you can end your day with something memorable.

An alternative to tourist favorites

Vienna is famous for its coffeehouses, museums, and palaces, and few visitors add a ‘light show in a Gothic church’ to their itinerary. If you’re the type of traveler who prefers lesser-known cultural encounters, this show is a meaningful option. It provides a quieter, more introspective experience, showcasing a different perspective of Viennese art life, away from the hustle of typical tourist hotspots.

What to expect?

The story—Told through light and sound

The Light of Creation show is divided into six thematic acts, each tracing a step in the creation of life—from cosmic origins to the emergence of human existence. There are no characters, just symbolic visuals that wash over the space, accompanied by an original musical score.

The space—Gothic grandeur in motion

Votivkirche church isn’t a typical show venue. It was built in the late 1800s as a thank-you offering after Emperor Franz Joseph survived an assassination attempt. As you enter, you’ll be greeted by grand columns, intricate stonework, and expansive stained-glass windows, all of which become integral parts of the visual narrative.

The music—Original and expansive

The soundtrack was composed specifically for the show by Emmy Award-winning composer Adam Lukas. It’s orchestral, atmospheric, and deeply tied to the visuals—sometimes meditative, sometimes intense. Plus, the acoustics, designed for choral echo, add a natural reverb that makes every note feel sacred.

The projections—Technical precision on historic walls

Think of it like digital art with a sacred backdrop. The projections are mapped precisely to the architecture, making perfect use of every niche, vault, and arch of the church’s magnificent interiors.

The mood—Reflective, not flashy

The mood—Reflective, not flashy

The experience is quiet and immersive. You won’t hear applause or chatter. People are usually still, sometimes visibly moved. It feels more like stepping into a living piece of art than watching a performance.
