Enter the eccentric world of Austrian artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser. The museum’s permanent collection features his visionary artworks, including paintings, graphic art, lithographs, silkscreens, etchings, woodcuts, tapestries, and eco-architectural models and blueprints that challenge conventional norms.
Step inside one of Vienna’s most unconventional buildings—designed entirely by Hundertwasser himself, who believed straight lines were unnatural. Curving walls, undulating wood-and-tile floors, irregular windows, asymmetrical rooms, and plant-covered facades turn this museum into a piece of art you can walk through.
Hundertwasser believed that humans are inseparable from nature and the environment. To this end, he designed the museum building with trees growing from the windows, green roofs, and vertical gardens. This arrangement is meant to help these “tree tenants” grow and become an integral part of the building.
Relax in Café Friedlich, the museum’s cafe that is designed in the typical Hundertwasser style. Its abundance of plants, colorfully tiled flooring, and mismatched chairs give it the look of a redolent garden courtyard. It’s the perfect spot to linger over a cup of Viennese coffee as you take in the views of the city from its windows.
